It is now November and you know what that means – time for updated Android distribution figures! While Android 5.0. Lollipop will be rolling out today, it looks like Android 4.4 KitKat has ended its run as the latest build of Android on a pretty good note at a distribution figure of around 30.2%.
This is a huge increase over last month which saw KitKat sitting at 24.5% distribution. However as it stands, Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean still commands the lion’s share in terms of distribution across Android handsets at a little over the 50% mark, but presumably this will start to dwindle as more OEMs update their devices to KitKat or when more Android 5.0 Lollipop handsets are released.
Interestingly enough it seems that Android 2.3 Gingerbread still holds a larger distribution rate over Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – 9.8% versus Ice Cream Sandwich’s 8.5%, but as expected both numbers are only the decline as newer versions of Android are slowly being released to smartphone owners.
We expect that Android 5.0 Lollipop will be off to a slow start, as we have seen in previous Android releases as it will take time for OEMs and carriers to push out the update, but we’ll be keeping an eye out to see if perhaps it will be adopted faster this time around.
