The day Android fans have been waiting for is finally here. Today Google announced that it is rolling out the latest version of its mobile operating system, Android 5.0, also known as Lollipop. It was unveiled to us as Android L back at I/O 2014 and not only does it bring some new features, Lollipop also has something called Material Design, which brings a whole new look and feel to Android.
Material Design is actually the implementation of Google’s vision to have one consistent design language that’s flexible enough to span across different devices such as mobile and desktop. The UI in Android 5.0 Lollipop has been built keeping that in mind.
Another aim with Material Design was to keep the focus on content, which is why there’s ample use of strong colors, bold typography and graphic design. Its not limited to the OS only, developers will be able to update their applications with UI based on Material Design, so there’s a unified look and feel across both the OS and the apps that run on it.
Despite the fact that Google has announced Android 5.0 Lollipop is rolling out today, it hasn’t revealed the devices it will be landing on first. One can bet that its going to be the Nexus series and Google Play Edition units but we’ll all like to know which one. Google has already said that Lollipop will be released for Nexus 4, 5, 7 (2012 and 2013) and the Nexus 10.
The latest Nexus devices, which include Nexus 6 and Nexus 9, ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop already installed.
