In an apparent push towards mobile, Microsoft today launched a new application that brings together its popular Skype brand and Qik, which was originally an online video streaming application that was acquired by Microsoft a couple of years back. The original app was retired back in April and now the service returns as Skype Qik, which allows users to send short video messages to each other quickly.
Sure there are countless applications out there that offer similar features but Microsoft has relied upon two things here. First is the popularity of the Skype brand and second is sheer simplicity. Install the app, sign up with your mobile number and then start video messaging with your friends.
There are no other options or features, its like texting, but instead of words you’re sending a video clip. If the recipient doesn’t have the Skype Qik app installed they’ll receive a text message instead with instructions on how to get the app.
Video clips can only be 42-seconds long and users can switch between front and rear camera freely during that time. There are no text options and you don’t have to wait for the video to process, you can send it straightaway after it has been taken.
The Skype Qik app is only available for iOS, Android and Windows Phone at this point in time. There’s no tablet support. No word as yet if and when it will be available on Windows and Mac.
