It has been a while since Motorola built and sold a tablet under its own name. The last slates that Motorola released were the DROID Xyboard 8.2 and DROID Xyboard 10.1 which didn’t really perform well in the market. Both tablets were released back in December 2011. Now though it appears that the company, which Google unloaded to Lenovo, is ready to get back into the ring. A report coming out of Taiwan cites Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanquing as saying that a new Motorola tablet will be built once Lenovo completes its acquisition of the company.
The report also cites Yuanquing saying that a “dual-branding” system will be released for the two tablets which will be released once the acquisition is completed. This means that depending upon the market where they’re sold the tablets will either carry the Motorola brand or the Lenovo brand. Apparently Lenovo will then move on to this strategy for smartphones as well that will be made by Motorola.
As far as the tablets themselves are concerned no details have been provided in the report. So it is not known right now what they look like, what specifications and features they have. It is only said that once the acquisition is done and dusted the tablets will soon be released.
It will be interesting to see how Motorola’s return in the tablet market will go. Even HTC is going to make a comeback this year with the Nexus 9 tablet, which is expected to be announced tomorrow.
