Well according to Phil Spencer, the head of the Xbox division at Microsoft, he has stated that creating Minecraft 2 does not make sense. Speaking during IGN’s podcast (via PC Gamer) this week, Spencer spoke about the possibility of a Minecraft sequel where he said, “I don’t know if Minecraft 2, if that’s the thing that makes the most sense.”
Spencer later adds, “The community around Minecraft is as strong as any community out there, and I think we need to meet the needs and the desires of what the community has before we get permission to go off and do something else.” Spencer also reassured gamers that Microsoft will not be rushing to license the Minecraft IP for other purposes.
We’re sure this was a concern for gamers when it was announced that Microsoft would be acquiring Mojang (and subsequently the Minecraft IP in the process). “I think we earn permission to do other things with Minecraft when we meet the Minecraft community’s desires around what the franchise is. I don’t want us to go and try to make it something it isn’t, but I do think it has room to grow.”
What do you guys think? If Microsoft/Mojang were to create a sequel to Minecraft, what kind of changes/improvements could they make that would make it a true successor to the original game?
