Don’t expect to be able to play Halo: The Master Chief Collection in multiplayer mode as soon as you get your hands on it. As it turns out, the title requires a day one patch before its multiplayer features can be accessed. The patch is no small download, it weighs in at 20GB, so unless you have blazing fast internet its going to be a considerable wait for this day one patch to download before you can start playing Halo: The Master Chief Collection with friends or strangers.
Dan Ayoub from 343 Industries, the developer of this title, explains why the day one patch is required. Halo: The Master Chief Collection contains updated versions of the first four Halo titles as well as the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta and access to the Halo: Nightfall TV series.
Given that the content is simply too much all of it can not be put on a single Blu-ray disc that has the capacity to hold 45GB worth of content. This is the reason why multiplayer features of the four updated titles can not be put on the Blu-ray disc itself and thus the 20GB day one patch becomes a necessity.
However its not like the game won’t be totally inaccessible. It will be possible to play through each Halo title’s campaign mode while the 20GB patch downloads in the background so you will still be able to get some gaming in. Not only does the day one patch bring those multiplayer features it also includes optimizations that weren’t completed when the game went gold.
