A report from The Wall Street Journal has revealed that the company will be closing two of their plants in Arizona and Massachusetts and will ultimately see about 890 employees being let go, and they have also asked the US Bankruptcy Court in New Hampshire to terminate their agreement with Apple which they are calling “oppressive and burdensome”.
It also seems that the company could be considering filing charges against Apple. According to a lawyer for the company, “The cash burn at GTAT’s sapphire manufacturing operations for the benefit of Apple is not sustainable. GTAT believes that it has many claims against Apple arising out of its business relationship with Apple.”
Like we said this is certainly a change in their tune from earlier this year where they boasted that their arrangement with Apple was going well. The company made waves earlier this week when they announced that they would be filing for bankruptcy, with Apple expressing their surprise at the matter. It is unclear how Apple will react to the potential lawsuit from GTAT, but we will keep our eyes peeled for more information.
