When Apple released the iPhone 5, the 4-inch display meant that apps were not optimized for it yet which also meant some rather ugly letterboxing. Eventually apps got resized to fit the 4-inch display, but with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple instead opted to stretch apps to fill the display which admittedly solved the letterboxing problem.
However the result was stretched out apps at a lower resolution that did not look as good as what many would have preferred. Well the good news is that if you’re a Gmail user and you’ve always relied on Google’s official Gmail app for iOS, you will be pleased to learn that Google has since updated their Gmail app to play nicely with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
This means that the app is not longer stretched to fill the display but has actually been optimized for both phones’ resolutions. This also means that users will be able to display more messages than before, so if you’d rather not use a third-party Gmail client, then we guess you should probably head on over to the iTunes App Store to get your hands on the app and the latest update. We expect that in time other apps will eventually be updated to support the new resolutions as well.
