According to a report from yesterday, it was suggested that retailers such as CVS and Rite Aid would not be allowing the use of Apple Pay in their stores. Well if you were hoping that it wasn’t true, you’d be disappointed to learn that it is. According to a report from The New York Times, both retailers have confirmed that they have disabled Apple Pay from working at their stores around the country.
It was suggested yesterday the reason behind this was because both companies were looking for alternatives or possibly launching something of their own. This has been semi-confirmed by Rite Aid where a spokeswoman affirmed that the retailer does not accept Apple Pay, and that the company is “still in the process of evaluating mobile payment options.”
Like we said, it has been speculated that the reason why the companies are disabling Apple Pay is because they are thinking of participating in the Merchant Customer Exchange which is basically a group of companies consisting of Walmart, Best Buy, and Gap where they are developing their own mobile payment system.
The system dubbed as CurrentC is rumored to be available next year, but we guess in the meantime both companies don’t plan on ceding market share to the Cupertino company’s mobile payment service. However Walgreens, the competitor to CVS and Rite Aid is a huge support of Apple Pay and has released a video showing how the feature can be used at their stores.
