Google made a few announcements today regarding new software and hardware. It confirmed that Android L’s official moniker is Android 5.0 Lollipop and that Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 will be the first devices to ship with this software pre-installed. The Android 5.0 Lollipop developer preview release for Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 was also subsequently confirmed. Builds for these devices will be out on October 17th.
Through an announcement today Google has confirmed that Android 5.0 Lollipop will be publicly released for its existing Nexus devices which include the Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10. Google Play Edition devices will also receive the update but it will only be rolled out once the new Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 are released by the next month.
The developer preview images are only available for the Nexus 5 and Wi-Fi Nexus 7 though and the new builds will be released on October 17th. The Android 5.0 SDK or software development kit will also be released for developers on that day.
This will allow developers to get their apps ready in time for the public release of Lollipop which seems to be destined for some time in November. Up till now Google has not officially confirmed when we can expect Lollipop to start rolling out for its existing Nexus crop.
We’ll keep a close eye on this though and will let you know as soon as Google says something on the matter.
