It was rumored a few months back that Samsung was working on a virtual reality headset in collaboration with Oculus. The company showed off this rumored product earlier this week at the IFA 2014 trade show in Berlin. Its called the Samsung Gear VR. At Berlin the product was announced without a price tag but reportedly the Samsung Gear VR price was confirmed by a spokesman for the company at the New York Fashion Week, where Samsung’s products were being promoted.
VentureBeat reports that a spokesman for Samsung revealed the Gear VR price at the company’s Lincoln Center booth in Manhattan where Samsung’s new products, including the Gear S smartwatch, are being promoted on the sidelines of the New York Fashion Week.
Samsung’s virtual reality headset, which uses the company’s new phablet flagship for the screen, will cost $199. Obviously the price does not include the Galaxy Note 4 which is needed for this to work. The expected street price of the Galaxy Note 4 is believed to be $700 off contract, on contract it may cost $199.
In Berlin Samsung said that the Gear VR will be released later this year. So far no final release date has been given. Carriers are expected to offer bundles of the VR headset with the Galaxy Note 4, but we may have to wait for a couple of months before they reveal their pricing.
