Philips claims to have released the first headphones that connect to iOS devices using the Lightning connector instead of the conventional 3.5mm headphone jack. At WWDC 2014 Apple did talk about headphones that will be compatible with Lightning connectors but it wasn’t revealed which accessory manufacturer would be the first to come out with them. Philips seems to have taken the lead with the Fidelio M2L.
Because it uses the Lightning port in iOS devices the Fidelio M2L can bypass internal DAC of the devices and play high resolution 24-bit audio through its built-in amplifier and DAC.
The headphones are also capable of eliminating interference and potential crosstalk. They provide wide ranging and noise isolated audio thanks to the two 40mm high magnetic intensity neodymium speaker drivers as well as a closed back acoustic architecture.
Some might have expected Beats to come out with headphones that take advantage of the Made for iPhone program that Apple has evidently expanded to audio accessories, given that the company is now owned by Apple. No word as yet when Beats will follow suit, for now Philips Fidelio M2L are the only Lightning connector compatible headphones for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
The Philips Fidelio M2L will be released in Europe and North America this December for €250 which is slightly north of $300.
