Now here is a spot of news that might just send tingles down your spine, especially if you so happen to be a Metal Gear fan. Word has it that Metal Gear Online, one of the earlier multiplayer success stories on the Sony PS3, has returned from the “dead”, so to speak. First of all, a little bit of history for those who want to be in the know. Metal Gear Online happened to have launched alongside MGS4: Guns of the Patriots in 2008, and it was given a shut down notice in 2012.
Metal Gear Online happened to be a 16 player PvP suite that was not all that popular where numbers were concerned, but those who happened to have played it were true blue fans – full of passion. Unfortunately, passion alone was not going to rake in the dough for Konami, which led to the executive decision of shutting it down.
Well, you cannot keep a good game down forever, and it seems that a bunch of white hat hackers known as SaveMGO have come together to deliver the game back online through private servers. Basically, this group of white hat hackers reverse-engineered the game’s code from on-disc files, prior to doing the same to both netcode and server code. Not only that, playing the resurrected Metal Gear Online will require one to have a modified PS3, although there is work being done by SaveMGO to have a workaround so that gamers can join in without having to modify their consoles.
