Markus “Notch” Persson Could Walk Away With $1.4bn In Microsoft Buyout

markus-notch-perssonWe’re sure many of you guys have heard the rumors that Microsoft could be thinking about acquiring Mojang, the company behind the popular game Minecraft. Later it was revealed that Minecraft’s creator, Markus “Notch” Persson was actually the one behind the acquisition and that he was the one who initiated talks between Mojang and Microsoft.

While we suppose being acquired by Microsoft would afford Mojang more exposure and more resources, what’s in it for Persson who has been rumored to be leaving the company post-acquisition? Well according to a report from the Financial Times, it seems that Persson has a lot to gain from the acquisition.

As it stands, he holds a 70% stake in Mojang and if the rumored $2 billion buyout is true, it would mean that Persson could walk away with a cool $1.4 billion. There have also been talks that Persson has felt very pressured to recreate the success of Minecraft, according to the report, which is why he had scrapped his plans for the 0x10c game.

In any case neither Microsoft nor Mojang have commented on the deal yet, but if the rumors are to be believed, the deal is said to be in its final stages which means that we could be hearing an official announcement from Microsoft/Mojang in the near future.
