When it comes to industrial design, one of the more well-known designers would be Apple’s Jony Ive who not only has been knighted in recognition of his work, but has also created products like the Harman Kardon SoundSticks III which has made its way into the permanent collection at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art.
That being said, it seems that Apple will be adding yet another famed designer to their employee list in the form of Marc Newson. This is according to a report from Vanity Fair who claims that the Cupertino company has recently hired Newson to work under Ive at Apple’s design team.
Newson and Ive are longtime friends and if you are wondering why his name sounds familiar, it is because both of them have collaborated on a handful of products in the the past, like a special edition Leica camera and the gold Apple EarPods, both of which were auctioned off in the name of charity.
According to Ive, “Marc is without question one of the most influential designers of this generation. He is extraordinarily talented. We are particularly excited to formalize our collaboration as we enjoy working together so much and have found our partnership so effective.”
Newson has also worked on items for luxury retailers, which once again highlights Apple’s trend in their recent hires which tends to be key people from the fashion industry. So far we’ve seen hires from Burberry, Yves Saint Laurent, Nike, and even Tag Heuer, so it will be interesting to see what Newson will be able to bring to the table.
