So with all the hullabaloo over how the iPhone 6 could feature a sapphire display, safe to say that many were slightly disappointed when Apple instead announced that the iPhone 6 would sport an ion-strengthened glass display. We guess this will have to do for now, but what gives? Why did the iPhone 6 not end up with a sapphire display despite all the fuss?
Well for starters we guess it could be because it was only a rumor and never confirmed, and rumors being what they are can sometimes end up being false information. However according to a report from Matt Margolis, a senior research analyst at PTT Research who has been following Apple’s sapphire production closely, he claims that productions issues was reason.
According to Margolis, “The plan as of several weeks ago was to include a sapphire covered iPhone 6 in yesterday’s launch. The issue that emerged is that the finishers were still having trouble creating the sapphire edges and yields were only at 25% or less.” However according to Margolis, he claims that the problem was not on GT’s end, but rather on the finishers who were tapped to perform the sapphire screen finishing.
The issues can apparently be worked out, but given that Apple has already announced the phones and are expected to use an ion-strengthened glass instead, it is unclear as to what Apple has planned for the sapphire – the iPhone 6s, perhaps?
