Time and again it has been rumored that the next generation iPhone is going to have a sapphire display. There have been countless contradictory reports as well which claims that Apple has decided to use the material in the 2015 iPhones. Apple has confirmed that it is holding an event on September 9th and we expect that the new iPhones will be unveiled there. Will they have sapphire displays as so many have predicted? A well known analyst doesn’t think so.

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, known for predictions about Apple products, writes in a note sent out to investors that sapphire displays aren’t on the cards for this year’s iPhone models. Kuo doesn’t think the material will be used in both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models.

What is the reason behind all the fuss about sapphire? Many consider this material to be much more durable and scratch resistant as opposed to the Gorilla Glass that is currently used by Apple for iPhone displays. However the costs associated with manufacturing and cutting sapphire glass is what might end up convincing Apple to stick with Gorilla Glass. Despite all of the rumors and reports Apple has not once hinted about using sapphire glass in the new iPhones.

The company already makes significant use of the material in its smartphones. Sapphire is used on the Touch ID fingerprint scanner’s surface as well as on the rear camera lens. While Kuo doesn’t think that the use won’t expand to displays, the analyst is of the view that this time around Apple is going to offer a 128GB variant of the iPhone 6.
