Apple has finally confirmed when its going to release the next iOS iteration for millions of devices out there. The confirmation came on stage today as the company unveiled its new smartphones, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Both new iPhones will start shipping on September 19th. Merely two days before the iOS 8 release is going to take place on September 17th.
If you remember correctly Apple talked about iOS 8 in detail back at WWDC 2014, the event that’s reserved for software related announcements. At today’s iPhone event the company merely ran through some of the features included in the new software and announced its official release date.
Apart from bringing updates for the user interface, iOS 8 has a new messaging app that allows users to send voice notes quickly. The notifications system has been improved and thanks to “extensibility,” third party apps can talk to each other. A standalone health app is also included in iOS 8. All of its features are described in detail in our iOS 8 overview.
Come September 17th, iOS 8 is going to be released for iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5s. iPod touch 5th generation also gets it. All iPads from the iPad 2 as well as both iPad mini and iPad mini with Retina display are compatible with iOS 8.
