We know that Apple and Intel have a relationship with one another in which Intel provides the chipsets used in Apple’s computers like the Mac Pro, iMac, and MacBook laptops. However as far as mobile devices are concerned, Apple’s got their own design and has Qualcomm supplying them with baseband chips, but this is something Intel hopes to change.
Speaking at a press meeting on Thursday in South Korea, Intel Korea’s president Lee Hee-sung has confidently claimed that companies such as Apple and LG will soon make the switch to Intel’s own baseband chips. “Chances are high that global smartphone makers such as Apple and LG Electronics will use Intel’s baseband chips in their products down the road.”
Lee cites how Intel and Samsung have worked together on the Samsung Galaxy Alpha and he believes that future collaborations with Apple and LG could be possible as well. Like we said Apple currently uses Qualcomm for its baseband chips, although at one point in time they did use Intel’s products in the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4.
So far Intel has been somewhat struggling in their attempts to break into the mobile industry. While there are several devices that are powered by Intel, they tend to be on the lower-end and aren’t as prolific compared to Qualcomm who is featured in high-end products like the Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3, HTC One M8, and more.
