With all this progress being made, when can we expect these self-driving cars to actually be made available to regular folks like you and me? In a year or two? Three? Well according to Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, it seems that we might have to wait 5 or 6 years before the technology is available, and also for laws and regulations to catch up to the new technology as well.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Musk revealed that one of the big things holding back these cars is the technology to recognize objects. He claims that Tesla and other companies are still working on perfecting the technology where computers are able to accurately identify objects that might be in the way.
As it stands, self-driving cars employ a variety of different technology such as cameras, sensors, and radars, but it really boils down to the software to help make the right decisions. That seems like sound reasoning and if you’re hoping to see self-driving cars in the near future, like we said, you’d probably be in for a wait.
