Yesterday might have been a big day for Apple fans yet it was equally important for millions of gamers around the world. Bungie’s new shooter Destiny was finally released on September 9th. Those who have been following this title from the start know that Activision, its publisher, sunk $500 million in the whole process. It proudly announced today that Destiny pulled in $500 million in revenue on its first day alone.
Doug Creutz, an analyst at Cowen & Co. says that Destiny was the most pre-ordered game in history that wasn’t a sequel in some franchise. Creutz sees the strong start in a positive light, adding that most games in this genre make 40 percent of sales for the entire year in their first five days after release.
Activision’s $500 million has already made Destiny one of the most expensive games ever made. The publisher’s CEO says that Activision believes Destiny will be “the most successful new intellectual property that’s ever been released.”
The title of the biggest release still rests with Take-Two Interactive’s Grand Theft Auto V which pulled in $800 million from around the world on its first day when it was released in September last year.
Destiny’s first day figure includes pre-ordered copies as well as copies bundled with the PlayStation 4. It has also been claimed to be the highest-moving digital console release ever as Destiny has become the most bought and downloaded title from Xbox Live and PlayStation Store.
All eyes are now on Destiny’s first billion and the way things are looking right now, that milestone might not be far off.
