Well it turns out that Apple could be thinking about getting into the 5K game as well, at least according to LCD market research firm WitsView (via MacRumors). The company claims that Apple is currently working on a new iMac whose display will sport a 5K resolution, which means that we could be looking at a resolution of 5,120 x 2,880.
This will be more than what the Thunderbolt display is offering right now which is a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440. While this sounds great for those who might actually need such displays, questions are being raised as to how Apple might power such a display, especially when the DisplayPort 1.2 standard is being used at the moment.
Instead some are suggesting that a 4K display will be likely instead of a 5K one. Given that Apple has yet to refresh its Thunderbolt display since its release about 3 years ago, chances are a hardware refresh could be in the works, but as to whether it will be released this year with a 4K or 5K resolution remains to be seen.
