At the iPhone event on September 9th Apple called out iconic rock band U2 for a performance. Once the band performed its new song it was announced that U2’s new album Songs of Innocence will be sent out for free to over 500 million iTunes users. But it appears that Apple and U2’s collaboration hasn’t ended. A new report from TIME suggests that the pair are working on a “secret project.”
What might that secret project be? Frontman Bono tells the publication that he believes a new digital format in the pipeline will turn out to be so “irresistibly exciting” to music lovers that they’ll be enticed to purchase music again, be it individual tracks or whole albums.
There have been countless reports for the past few months detailing how music purchasing has gone down thanks to streaming services and streaming websites like YouTube at a time when the industry is already being hit by widespread piracy. The aim of this secret project may very well be to help the entire industry as a whole, particularly upcoming artists who don’t have a global fan base and following.
There’s no additional information available on this secret project as of now and Apple isn’t making anything easier by keeping itself tightlipped. While we’re on the subject of Apple and U2, if you are one of those iTunes users who didn’t like receiving Songs of Innocence without your consent, use this tool to remove U2’s new album from your device.
