Giving away albums with smartphone purchases isn’t new. In fact this is something that companies such as Sony have done in the past, and it is what Apple has recently done where they gave away U2’s Songs of Innocence album to all of its iTunes customers. Now according to a report from Billboard, it seems that Apple and U2’s partnership is far from over.
Speaking to Guy Oseary, U2’s manager, it was revealed that U2 and Apple are working together on possibly creating a new format in which music can be consumed. When asked what else could fans expect from future collaborations with Apple, Oseary replied that they are working with Apple on how music is “heard”.
Oseary was quoted as saying, “The band really wants people to engage with albums, they want them to support the art form of artwork and lyrics and video content and just get into their music in a much different way than an MP3 file.” If anything his statement sounds like we could be talking about more than just higher quality tracks.
We’ve seen bands attempt to release their songs in different formats in the past, such as apps in which fans would be able to enjoy the album in a different way and could possibly get access to videos within the app as well, as opposed to just the files which are pretty static. It sounds interesting and we can’t wait to see what kind of new medium/format that U2 and Apple can come up with.
