Xiaomi, a company that’s only four years old, has seen phenomenal success during the short time it has been around. Every quarter it sells millions upon millions of units on its home turf in China and now the company is looking to expand into neighbouring markets. China is still in its sights though and it hasn’t stop concentrated on home. According to a new report from market research firm Canalys Xiaomi is now the biggest smartphone vendor in China, overtaking Samsung to clinch the no.1 spot.
Canalys’ report indicates that during the April to June quarter this year Xiaomi commanded a 14 percent market share in China as opposed to Samsung’s 12 percent. It even claims that the Korean juggernaut was only able to stay ahead of Lenovo in third place as it sold an additional 200,000 units in the three months ending June 2014.
Samsung enjoyed being no.1 in China for over two years. At one point it even commanded over 22 percent of the entire smartphone market in China. Now though the company faces competition from China’s local OEMs which are competing purely on price, Xiaomi is one of them.
Xiaomi aims to ship over 60 million smartphone units in 2014. It may be able to achieve this target given the fact that during the first half of this year Xiaomi sold 26.1 million units. During the second half it may be aided greatly be increased footprint in markets other than China.
