One of the reasons why some people get motion sickness from playing video games or by using simulators such as the Oculus Rift is because there is a disconnect between what your eyes see and your inner ear. Basically your eyes see that your character on the screen is moving, but your inner ear doesn’t register that movement and that conflict can cause motion sickness in some.
Well if you were worried about motion sickness with the Oculus Rift, then perhaps taking the Oculus Rift for a ride on a rollercoaster should solve your problems! If that sounds a bit insane, that’s pretty much what a group of researchers from the Kaiserslautern University in Germany have done.
Teaming up with rollercoaster builder Mack Rides, they have created a handful of apps for the Oculus Rift which syncs with the rollercoaster’s motion by tracking their wheels. So not only do you get the thrill of riding a rollercoaster, but at the same time you could be transported to a whole different world, like riding a horse chariot, a submarine, a space shooter, and more.
We have to say that this is a pretty awesome idea, although we guess it will most probably not be for the faint of heart. In the meantime if you’d like to learn more, you can head on over to their website for the details, or you can check out the video above to see the Oculus Rift in action!
