At Gamescom 2014 Microsoft announced a major software update for the Xbox One and detailed some of the new features that will make their way to the console through this update. Over the weekend this update has been rolled out to members of the Xbox Live preview program. These members will be able to try out all the previously announced features, as well as some unannounced features that have now been added to the update.
The Xbox Live preview program was unveiled by Microsoft back in February. Select Xbox Live subscribers are given the opportunity to try out these updates ahead of actual release, membership into the program is by invitation only.
The latest update adds support for the “Xbox On” voice command in additional markets, and includes Microsoft’s efforts on the back end to ensure the console’s launch goes smoothly in 28 new markets in the coming weeks. It brings the ability to set the console to boot directly into television when waking up from connected standby.
Other features include the addition of a new media player app that enables users to play media files from an attached USB drive or through DLNA. Initially though only USB drives will be supported, DLNA support will be added later. The update also brings a new Friends section which enables users to see what’s going on with their friends. Microsoft’s Major Nelson has shared the entire list of features on the official blog.
As far as the general public release is concerned, it is expected that this major Xbox One update will hit console owners at some point next month.
