A handful of companies are working in the U.S. to bring gigabit internet to households in various parts of the country however it is still not widespread. Google is one of those companies. The rollout of its Fiber gigabit internet service has been slow and is limited to few cities. Folks in Cincinnati won’t have to wait long to get access to gigabit internet though. Cincinnati Bell is launching a service of its own for the average consumer.
The company confirmed that it will start offering Fioptics internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second to consumers starting September 8th. Cincinnati Bell’s president and CEO Ted Torbeck said that the company’s Fioptics gigabit internet is up to 100 times faster than conventional broadband internet.
The roll out has begun after a successful trial run which took place over the summer. Initially the service was only offered to small businesses and now it will be brought for any and all consumers as part of the company’s “Light Up Cincinnati” program. Its an initiative that aims to provide residents of Cincinnati and the businesses with reliable, faster and accessible services.
Having gigabit internet envy? Fear not. Cincinnati Bell will also offer free Wi-Fi hotspots across the city, allowing visitors to see just how good (or bad) its new gigabit internet service is.
