Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi is merely four years old yet it is rapidly becoming one of the most popular and successful smartphone manufacturers in the country. Today it revealed sales statistics for the first half of 2014. In this period Xiaomi sold 26.11 million smartphones which equals to a 271 percent year-over-year increase. In all of 2013 it sold 18.7 million units, this year it has smashed that number with still six months left for it to further extend its lead.
The company has already said a couple of months back that in 2014 it aims to sell 60 million smartphones. That’s an ambitious goal since just two years back it entire sale volume for 2012 was just 7.19 million. This goes to show just how rapidly Xiaomi is making its presence felt in the Chinese market.
Xiaomi is seen to have outsold the likes of Samsung in China, with its competitively priced Android smartphones. Its target demographic has primarily been the youth. Research finds that majority of Xiaomi’s customers are those who are buying a smartphone for the first time, and since its devices are competitively priced, they present themselves as a compelling option. 23 percent of its customers were those who were switching from a Samsung device.
The company now has its sights set on the world. With ex-Googler Hugo Barra leading global expansion plans Xiaomi announced that this year it be in a total of 14 markets, including but not limited to Thailand, Brazil, Russia, Turkey and Mexico apart from Hong Kong and China.
