T-Mobile’s Rumored Cellphone Unlocking App Surfaces Again

Earlier last week it was announced that the phone unlocking bill had been passed by the Senate. What does this mean for the average user? Well it basically means that you are allowed to unlock phones legally, where previously a law had made it so that unlocking your phone was considered an illegal act, thus making it difficult for users who travel a lot to use a different SIM card.

So with the new law in effect, users are allowed to unlock the phone themselves, head to their carrier, or seek out a technician to do it for them. However it seems that T-Mobile could be thinking about making the process a lot simpler and straightforward.

According to the folks at TmoNews, they claim to have received a document suggesting that T-Mobile could be looking to develop an app that would allow users to unlock their phones themselves. If you’re wondering why this sounds familiar, it is because an earlier rumor about the Samsung Galaxy Avant suggested something similar, but some were a bit skeptical and suggested that the app was used to test the phone on competing networks and wasn’t designed for regular users in mind.

However based on the guide, it seems to suggest that the app can be made available for regular users and basically guides the user through unlocking their device. As it stands it seems that the app will only be available for Android devices and it only lists the Samsung Galaxy Avant. In any case given T-Mobile’s propensity to do things out of the box, we wouldn’t be surprised if the app was real, but do take it with a grain of salt for now and check back with us at a later date for the details.
