The investment will go towards the increase in production of sensors used in both smartphones and tablets, and interestingly enough, Sony has also announced that they will be courting more handset manufacturers to get orders for front-facing cameras, which we guess is Sony’s way of capitalizing on the selfie trend.
Given that most front-facing cameras don’t look half as good as their rear-facing cameras, this is something that Sony would like to change. The production increase will take place at two factories – one will be on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, and the other will be in northwest Japan where Sony had bought the factory from Renesas Electronics (a company that Apple apparently had their eye on).
We’re not sure what will come from this ultimately, but if it results in better quality cameras and photos, we’re all for it!
