iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c Leading In Europe, Galaxy S5 Catching Up

Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were launched late last year, but it seems that their popularity could be waning as over in Europe, it has been reported that the Samsung Galaxy S5 is catching up. Despite the phone launching earlier this year, recent stats revealed by Kantar Worldpanel has revealed that the Galaxy S5 has taken the number 3 spot in Europe’s big-five markets.

These markets include the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. The report also reveals that both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c continue to lead in the European market, but based on these numbers, it certainly sounds like the Galaxy S5 could be catching up pretty fast. Breaking down the numbers, Kantar found that 17% of the Galaxy S5 owners had previously come from Apple devices.

However the majority of the sales, 58% to be exact, came from current Samsung customers. According to Kantar’s strategic insight director, Dominic Sunnebo, the reason Apple users could be defecting is because of the Galaxy S5’s larger display. However he notes that this is an area Apple will be able to address later this year with the launch of the iPhone 6 which is rumored to come in either a 4.7-inch or 5.5-inch size.

Despite Apple’s lead in Europe, the majority of devices are still powered by Android. Android currently dominates the European market with 73.3% market share, while iOS currently sits at 16.6%, and with Windows Phone at 8.1%.
