While Android phones and tech companies such as Qualcomm, NVIDIA, Samsung, and MediaTek have long left behind dual-core processors and have since advanced to quad-core and even octa-core chipsets, it looks like Apple could still be sticking to their guns. Apple has been rumored to use their upcoming A8 processor the iPhone 6.
While we expect that Apple will continue the trend of 64-bit chipsets like with the A7, it is unclear if Apple will turn to quad-core for the A8. Unfortunately according to the recent rumors, it seems that Apple will continue to use a dual-core processor setup for the A8. This rumors comes from Chinese website, CnBeta, who revealed that Apple will only be bumping its processor speed instead.
They claim that Apple will be boosting the A8’s speed to 2.0GHz instead, if not more. As it stands, the iPhone 5s is powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz, so while the A8 is rumored to retain the dual-core setup, the jump to 2.0GHz would increase its performance, but hopefully not at the cost of its battery, which last we heard wasn’t exactly a very huge leap in capacity.
The increase in processor speed is said to be thanks to the 20-nm manufacturing process, versus the 28-nm process used for the A7 chip. Now we’re sure some are wondering if a dual-core setup makes sense in a quad-core world, but given that Apple controls everything from hardware to software, perhaps they don’t have a need to make the jump just yet.
Either way take it with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for more info. In the meantime what do you guys think?
