Amazon will soon open up its Prime Instant Video service to hundreds of millions of Android devices. Those who subscribe to the service can either stream video on desktop computers or use the official apps available for the company’s own Kindle devices, several game consoles, smart TVs and Apple’s iPads. Amazon hasn’t released an official app for conventional Android devices but it has confirmed that one will be released in the very near future.
Marketing director at Amazon Instant Video Russell Morris tells PC Advisor that an app for Android is “imminent,” though Morris didn’t confirm if the Android app will be limited to smartphones or if it will be available for both smartphones and tablets.
This move would serve Amazon’s own interests since the app would significantly increase the reach of its streaming service and put it head to head with Netflix on devices that it has never been available on. Given the fact that not everyone has an iPad or a Kindle device, opening up the service to conventional Android devices will surely bring a bump in the numbers.
As previously mentioned Amazon has not yet confirmed exactly when the app is going to be released. By “imminent” I gather it shouldn’t take a lot of time for it to be released in the Google Play Store. We’ll keep our eyes peeled and let you know when the app arrives.
