It is no secret that Nintendo’s Wii U isn’t doing so well at the moment. In fact last we heard, the Wii U had failed to live up to Nintendo’s expectations, even after Nintendo had previously drastically slashed their earlier estimates. Also with the Sony PlayStation 4 and the Microsoft Xbox One both doing so well, it would seem that the Wii U is sitting in a distant third position.
Or are they? Well according to Nintendo of America’s boss, Reggie Fils-Aime, he believes that the Wii U is actually in second place in the console wars. Speaking during an interview at E3 2014 last week, Fils-Aime was asked if he believed that the Wii U would ever outsell the PS4 or the Xbox One.
His response, according to The Seattle Times, “The dirty little secret is if you look at life-to-date numbers, between Sony and Nintendo they’d be pretty close in terms of PS4 vs. Wii U, with Xbox coming in third place,” adding, “I think it’s going to be a three-horse race for the balance of this cycle.” Given that the Wii U has been around since towards the end of 2012, we guess the company does have a headstart in terms of sales compared to the PS4 or Xbox One.
Fils-Aime also stated that he does not believe that Nintendo needs to create a new console, despite the Wii U not performing so stellar at the moment. He claims that games like Mario Kart 8 and the upcoming Super Smash Bros. will help drive sales, which is true as previously we had reported that Mario Kart 8 had helped to increase Wii U sales in countries like Japan.
