We first heard rumors at the start of this year that Sprint was going to launch Wi-Fi calling. It did indeed, the official announcement was made in February. The first devices to support this feature on the carrier were the Samsung Galaxy Mega and the Galaxy S4 mini. Most of the devices on the carrier that have support for this feature need a dedicated software update before it can actually be used. Sprint today released that update for Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5.
The update carries version number G900PVPU1ANE5 and brings Wi-Fi calling. The changelog doesn’t list any other changes so it looks like this feature is all there is to the recent software update for the Galaxy S5 on Sprint.
Sprint Wi-Fi calling is a free feature. Subscribers will be able to make voice calls and send messages over a public, office or home Wi-Fi network. Domestic messaging and calling will be free whereas standard CDMA rates will apply for international communications.
Once the over-the-air update lands on a Sprint Galaxy S5 all users have to do to activate Wi-Fi calling is head to the Apps folder and switch it on. Activation is only required for the first time after which everything happens behind the scenes. It essentially improves provides subscribers with text and call service in areas with limited or no service.
