It was quite evident that Watch Dogs had instantly become popular following its launch on previous-gen, next-gen consoles and PC last month. Ubisoft announced that this was its fast selling game to date only a day after it was released. Now the publisher has revealed numbers of the first full week. Watch Dogs sales in the first week alone topped 4 million copies across all platforms, setting a record of the best new franchise launch in the process.
Moreover the title’s free companion app, ctOS Mobile, has already been downloaded by over a million people on their mobile devices. This is undoubtedly Ubisoft’s best selling launch ever.
Soon after Watch Dogs hit shelves there were issues with the uPlay login server. The issues were also faced by players on next-gen consoles. It may have been the huge rush of users that crippled servers. This success doesn’t even count the eventual launch of Watch Dogs on Wii U, slated for later this year.
At this rate a sequel seems more assured than ever. Tony Key, Ubisoft’s senior vice president of sales and marketing said in a statement that the publisher is “proud” of this achievement and that its confident the Watch Dogs brand “has a promising future.”
I, for one, am certainly intrigued about what the sequel might bring.
