Sonic the Hedgehog, touted to be the fastest hedgehog in the world, also happens to be one of the more popular gaming characters to date, having his heydays in the 16-bit era when he zipped around on the Sega Megadrive. He might eventually catch up with Mario in terms of movie releases though, with whispers on the ground pointing to a possible Sonic the Hedgehog movie that is being developed by Sony and Neal Moritz. Neal happens to be a producer of movies such as I Am Legend, 21 Jump Street, and the Fast and the Furious series, in addition to popular TV series like Prison Break and Tru Calling.
It does seem as though this particular Sonic the Hedgehog movie will make use of both computer animation as well as live action, which might make it end up like the Smurf movies that we have seen in recent times. Such speculation would make sense, considering how the Smurfs movies were produced by Sony as well.
Hannah Minghella, president of production at Sony’s Columbia Pictures, shared, “There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”
Possible plots could revolve around Dr Robotnik, Sonic’s eternal nemesis, and we might also catch glimpses of other characters such as Tails his sidekick.
