Soon after Google unveiled Android Wear LG and Motorola were among the first to confirm that they would be building smartwatches on the new platform. While other major manufacturers like Samsung and Sony are in the smartwatch market as well they’ve chosen to stick to their own platforms for the time being, though they haven’t completely closed the door on Android Wear. If speculation is correct than the Samsung Android Wear smartwatch might have stopped by the FCC recently to gain approval.
FCC test reports were discovered recently for a Samsung product carrying model number SM-R382, called a “smart wearable” wristwatch based on the documents submitted to the Commission. There’s one little detail that is causing speculation about what platform it is based on. This smartwatch happens to be 10 millimeters shorter from top to bottom as opposed to the existing Gear watches from Samsung.
Since FCC’s business is only with radio transmissions the documents don’t reveal whether its powered by Tizen or Android Wear. Samsung’s first Galaxy Gear smartwatch was powered by Android but recently it released the Tizen update for the original Gear.
However this timing is a bit intriguing. Google’s I/O developer event is only a couple of weeks away and Android Wear is expected to be featured quite a bit. The possibility exists that this might be the third smartwatch that Google shows off at I/O 2014 alongside LG G Watch and Motorola Moto 360.
Once again, all of this is just speculation. Nothing has been officially confirmed, so take this with a grain of salt.
