Well thankfully it looks like they might just be able to sell it at a lower price. As you might have heard, Facebook recently announced that they would be acquiring Oculus VR, the company behind the Oculus Rift, and it is because of that buyout that will allow the company to sell the device at a lower price.
Speaking to the folks at Ars Technica, Oculus VR’s CEO, Brendan Iribe was quoted as saying, “I think [the Facebook buyout] is going to allow us to deliver consumer V1 at a lower cost, because we’re not trying to drive a high margin on this.” He adds that Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is on board with the idea and might be even more enthusiastic about it than he is. “Mark is much more in the mindset of ‘Let’s get this to scale with the best quality product at the lowest cost possible.'”
Exactly how “lower cost” the final product will be remains to be seen, but we guess gamers can take comfort in knowing that both Oculus VR and Facebook are working to make it as affordable as possible.
