Metaio one of the leaders in augmented reality technology, that powers a current community of over 100,000 developers, has released its own 6D Augmented Reality Holodeck. Now our Startrek dream technology can become reality!
The 6D Holodeck allows users to move around a tablet and see a virtual world in the display in place of the real room they are navigating. I have seen a similar demo last week in a hotel in San Francisco, the Holoroom, delivered by Lowe’s Innovation Labs in partnership with Sci Future. The Holoroom will help Lowe’s customer select furnitures and appliances for their home by visualizing the final room in augmented reality through the iPad display.
Today, Metaio is releasing the source code for the technology to developers so they can build similar experiences like the Lowe’s Holoroom application. Lowe’s Labs does not use the Metaio SDK. The possibilities are endless: develpers will be able to create next generation action-games or learning experiences like visiting foreign places, planets or being able to visualize micro or nano elements found in nature.
According to the company, the 6D Augmented Reality Holodeck (6d-AR) uses the latest Simultaneous Learning And Mapping (SLAM) combined with the tablet’s motion sensors (IMUs) and the camera to display in real time a virtual world on top of a regular room on the mobile device.
