Mario Kart 8 Sold More Than 1.2 Million Units

Nintendo looks like they were right on the money when they mentioned that Mario Kart 8 would catalyze the sales of the flagging Nintendo Wii U, especially when you take into consideration that Mario Kart 8 managed to sell over 1.2 million units throughout the first weekend on sale around the world. In fact, this latest karting title from the long standing franchise has also picked up its fair share of bouquets in terms of review scores, being the 14th Wii U game to launch in the U.S. that carries a Metacritic score of at least 85.

Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime, said, “The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for Wii U are still ahead. This year’s E3 is just days away, and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms. This milestone is a great place to start!”

Before there was the success of Mario Kart 8, however, the previous seven games in the series have already sold a grand total of more than 100 million units around the world, including Mario Kart Wii for Wii and Mario Kart DS for the Nintendo DS range. The other titles would include the seminal Super Mario Kart on the SNES, where it was followed up by Mario Kart 64 for the Nintendo 64, before it dipped a bit with Mario Kart Advance on the Game Boy Advance. The other titles will be Mario Kart: Double Dash!! on the Nintendo GameCube and Mario Kart 7 on the Nintendo 3DS.
