A few years ago, LaCie announced their series of Rugged external hard drives. These hard drives have been designed to be rugged, meaning that you will be able to take it with you on the go without worrying about it getting damaged from bumps or drops to the ground. It’s hardly indestructible but we guess the added protection offers peace of mind.
That being said if you’re a Thunderbolt user, you might be interested to learn that LaCie has recently updated its Rugged hard drive with a Thunderbolt cable. For those wondering why this sounds familiar, perhaps you’re thinking about the Rugged Thunderbolt hard drive. This is another offering from LaCie that has the Thunderbolt port. The main difference between these two products is that the newer version comes with a Thunderbolt cable attached to it.
This means is that if you’re looking to use Thunderbolt connectivity but don’t want to buy the cable yourself, the new LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt will have one already attached to it. LaCie has also designed it in such a way that you can store the Thunderbolt cable in the drive itself when not in use, so that it isn’t hanging out and exposing itself to damage. Apart from that, it appears to be more or less the same device from before.
It will have a USB 3.0 port and LaCie claims that with Thunderbolt, users can look forward to transfer rates of 387MBps with the SSD version, and 122MBps with regular hard drives. Available mid-June, the LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt will be priced at $219.99 for the 1TB model and $299.99 for 2TB. The SSD models will retail for $299.99 for 250GB and $499.99 for the 500GB.
