BBM used to be one of the defining apps of the BlackBerry platform, and users would actually get themselves a BlackBerry handset in order to use the feature to stay in touch with friends. However BlackBerry has since opened up BBM to other smartphone operating systems, such as iOS and Android, it wasn’t too long ago that BlackBerry confirmed that BBM for Windows Phone was in the works as well.
Now if you were wondering when you can get your hands on the app, you might be pleased to learn that we now have a slightly more concrete release date. Speaking during BlackBerry’s earnings call, the company’s CEO, John Chen, confirmed that BBM would be seeing a release on Windows Phone in July.
Chen did not mention any specific dates other than the month of July, so for all we know it could be towards the end of July, but here’s hoping that it will be seeing a release in early July, for the sake of eager Windows Phone users who can’t wait to get their hands on the app. With its release on Windows Phone, BlackBerry has pretty much every major smartphone operating system covered.
BlackBerry has recently tried to monetize the app, which is a free download for those wondering, through the Channels feature. It allows companies to create sponsored channels as well as promote their brands or products through it, much like Facebook users liking a certain company’s page. So far it seems to be doing quite well and hopefully it will do even better now that BBM will soon be available to more users.
