This is according to Jim Dalrymple of The Loop who stated that Apple had confirmed to him that this was the case. In a statement made by Apple, “With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture.”
So what about your current Aperture libraries? Well fret not because you will be able to migrate them into Photos for OS X. “When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS X.” While it is true that Photos for OS X will allow for photo editing, we have to wonder if professionals will think that it is powerful enough for their work.
We’re not sure why Apple has decided to discontinue Aperture, but given that the software hasn’t seen a major update in a while, we guess it had it coming. We guess photographers can still continue to use the old version of Aperture, or they can start looking at alternatives. In the meantime Apple has reassured that other professional apps like Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro will continue to be developed.
