A Metallic LG G3 Would Have Been Heavier, Bulkier, And More Expensive

Back in May, LG unveiled their next flagship handset, the LG G3. What sets the phone apart from the rest of the competition is its 2K display. Granted there are other phones in the market that already incorporates such a display, but we guess LG is one of the first mainstream OEMs to do that, beating the likes of Samsung to the punch.

Now during the course of designing a phone, we’re sure many changes are made, since the final product we are looking at is hardly the first draft. Previously LG’s VP of mobile design, Chul Bae Lee, had stated that the phone almost came with even thinner bezels, and after speaking to Trusted Reviews, it turns out that another design compromise was with the use of metal for the phone.

According to Lee, it seems that using metal would have made the phone a lot more expensive. “If you could charge $300 more for the phone, maybe we could make it metal,” he said. He also adds that by using metal, it would have made the phone a lot more bulkier and heavier. “If I had applied metal to the G3 is would be much bulkier in the bezels and in all four directions. It would be very big and very heavy. It would be really slippery as well.”

Prior to the LG G3 being announced, there were rumors that suggested that the phone would indeed have a metal build. In fact leaked photos showed off the back of the phone which seemed to suggest that it had a brushed metal design, although it turned out to be plastic with a faux-metal effect painted onto it. Then again the phone itself is pretty impressive hardware wise, so perhaps the lack of metal could be forgiven, right?
