While a lot of gamers out there actually purchase their games legally, either via retailers like GameStop, or platforms like Steam, Origin, GOG, and etc., there are probably just as many gamers out there who prefer to pirate their games, and not spend a single cent. Well the bad news is that if you were hoping to get your hands on Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs, which is scheduled for a release on the 27th of May, via illegal means, such as torrenting, you could be in for a nasty surprise.
According to reports, there have been plenty of cracked and broken versions of the game that have been making their way on torrent websites across the internet. These are probably created by hackers who are trying to capitalize on the upcoming game by creating fake torrents. Not only will you be wasting your time downloading the fake torrent, but there is also a good chance you could end up installing a bitcoin miner on your computer as well.
There is a torrent that will end up installing two files on your computer: Winlogin.exe and ltc.exe, with the lattter being the bitcoin miner. The program also takes up 25% of your computer’s processing power, so you might suddenly find your computer running a lot slower than it should, and possibly a lot hotter than it should as well, especially if your computer does not have a proper cooling system in place.
The former program should not be confused with the legitimate OS file, Winlogon.exe, but we guess with it being named similarly, it could confuse users who are trying to figure out what is going on. So far there have been reports of massive CPU usage, and in some cases, even the dreaded blue screen of death. In any case if you are tempted to download a pirated copy of the game, don’t, your computer will thank you for it.
