The Chromecast is a popular $35 dongle that is plugged into the HDMI port of a TV. This dongle allows users to beam their content on the big screen. There are standalone Android and iOS apps for it, beaming content to Chromecast is also possible through desktop computers. A new browser extension has been released which lets users cast any video file. It is called the VideoStream Chrome extension.

The extension is installed within Chrome itself so there’s no additional software to download on the computer. Its quite fast and supports local video files stored on the PC or even on the network. Users don’t need to be hooked to Chrome whenever they want to control it, VideoStream has an Android remote control which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

What’s impressive is VideoSteam’s support for almost any kind of video file, be it an AVI, MKV or conventional format like MP4 and MPG. Users might also like the fact that it has subtitle support as well. The extension is also capable of audio playback, though naturally that would mean no video would be displayed on the TV.

VideoStream for the Chrome web browser is now available for download absolutely free from the Chrome web store.
