Elbit Systems has recently announced the launch of their SKYLENS wearable head-up display that will target Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) applications. Basically, with the SKYLENS heads-up display in action, pilots will be able to find their way through fog easier than ever before. This is essential since it could very well end up as a life saver during one of those moments when everything that can go wrong, does go wrong.
The SKYLENS comes in a lightweight, easy-to-install device, which is not too different from that of a pair of sunglasses. Boasting of a revolutionary approach to meet the challenges of today’s aviators, the SKYLENS is suitable for day and night operations regardless of the weather condition, where the pilot will enjoy head-up information while minimizing the dependency on airport instrumentation. This allows aircraft equipped with SKYLENS to take-off and land in low visibility conditions and in locations where non EVS-equipped aircraft were unable to access.
SKYLENS works by showing off high-resolution symbology and video on a transparent visor, hence giving pilots the relevant cutting edge head out capabilities. It can be used in the realm of global commercial aviation, and is tipped to enter service at the end of 2016 – which is still some ways left to go. [Press Release]
