Now we know Nokia has expressed interest in connected automobiles before, and has even invested $100 million towards such vehicles, so it’s not surprising that a video has popped up recently showing off Nokia’s HERE Maps and HERE Maps data powering a self-driving Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
According to the HERE blog, “The car has radar sensors and stereoscopic cameras that have a 360-degree view around the vehicle. These are coupled with intelligent controls which not only identify other cars, pedestrians and other obstacles.”
They also talk about how the system is able to process the data to make predictions. “They also process the input from the sensors to predict what’s going to happen around it and assist the driver in avoiding accidents, stopping the car before it collides with anything, or anyone.” They even go as far as saying that the system can react faster than humans.
To be fair, as one gets more experienced with driving, there are tell-tale signs that you can watch out for from other drivers. According to Ogi Redzic, VP of Connected Driving at HERE, “Autonomous vehicles will radically transform how we live and work, ushering in a new era of personal mobility.”
